Obituary For Ruth Nordbye

Ruth I. Nordbye passed peacefully on August 4, 2016 at 98 years of life. As a lifelong resident of Rapid City, Ruth will be remembered for her service to the community. Red Cross became more than a career. First as a tireless volunteer and then as the director of the local office, Ruth’s focus was building the volunteer base and responding not only to the needs of the military at Ellsworth Air force Base, but delivering the services that the Red Cross made available. In June of 1972, her disaster relief training would be challenged. The flood shattered Rapid City. As Director, it was her responsibility to coordinate the volunteers and bring a sense of urgency and implement the disaster plan. It would be sixty hours before she would sleep. Ruth was active in the VFW Auxiliary holding state and national offices. She valued her membership with the American Business Women’s organization. Three children, LuEtta Loeber of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Peter Nordbye and Blythe of Portland Oregon, and Lon Nordbye and Rachel of Parker, Colorado, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren survive her.
