Obituary For Sandra Jean Mains Haskell

Sandra Mains Haskell, 76, Rapid City, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, March 1, 1936, to Paul & Roberta (Sherman) Mains. Her early years were spent in Northern Michigan with the family moving to Arizona and finally settling in Rapid City. Her only sibling, sister Paula, was born in 1939. On May 14, 1952 she married Robert Haskell in Rapid City (almost 60 years). The couple then moved to Texas where their first son Steven was born. They returned to Rapid City in 1953 where 3 additional children joined the family, Terry in 1954, Roberta (Bobbi) in 1957 and Leslie in 1959. Sandi spent her life teaching, learning, and facing each day with strong determination to make the most of life with her humorous personality. When her children were small she was a Red Cross Life Safety trainer, which included teaching some of her children to swim before they could walk. She touched the lives of many individuals in the Rapid City area. In her private music studio she taught piano, organ, accordion, and guitar. Later in her career she taught Arts & Crafts courses for the Rapid City Schools’ adult education program. She was active in Republican Women (Pres. 1970) and Republican politics. When her sister Paula retired and relocated to Rapid City, they collaborated in writing and publishing two children’s books. Their third book is being submitted for publication. Sandi spent 60 years researching family history through Europe and US. She was the Elliot Clan Chief and Hamilton Clan Chief for South Dakota and a proud member of the Society of Black Hills Pioneers. In recent years she became an active member of the COPD Foundation. She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church. Sandi enjoyed traveling to research family history and spending time with all family. She was preceded in death by her parents and son Steve. She is survived by husband, Robert , Rapid City; sister Paula (Cecil Marsh); son Terry (Becky), Rapid City; daughter, Bobbi (John Brown), Pierre, SD; daughter, Leslie (Bob Warax), Rapid City, granddaughters, Amanda (Tom Ruddy); Dr. Erin Brown (Kyle Krause); Robin (Jordan Hoss) and Emily Haskell; grandson, Colin Brown; and great-granddaughters, Alexis and Abagail.A memorial has been established to benefit the South Dakota Lions Eye Bank. Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Atonement Lutheran Church with Rev. Jon Mapa officiating. Interment will follow at the Bear Butte Cemetery.
