Obituary For Shirley Fay Spell
Shirley Fay Spell, 83, passed away on January 03, 2026 at Fountain Springs Assisted Living Center in Rapid City, SD.
Shirley was born on February 17, 1942 to Jim and Betty (Wagner) Jenkins in Pueblo CO. Shirley Graduated Highschool from Cheyenne Central in 1961 and obtained her cosmetology license in June 1961. On Dec 31, 1961 Shirley married James M. Spell of Pridgen GA. Shirley had two sons Eric H. Spell (1968-2013) and Kirk J. Spell born in 1970.
In 1968 Shirley and James moved to Rapid City, SD where she lived and made her life. During the 1970s and 80s she was busy raising her boys and was active in several community organizations (Elks auxiliary, Women's Aglow, Parent Teacher Assoc and swim team mom). Shirley was an accomplished Calligrapher, often sought out to hand create invitations and thank you notes.
In 1998 Shirley purchased 820 South St (a 1909 house in the Queen Anne architecture and on the National register of historic places) and started Morning's Glory Bed and Breakfast which she ran until May 2006). The next 20 years were spent enjoying her grandchildren, being active in her church families, Knitting (as well as teaching knitting) and always being a shining light and hostess to anyone she met.
Most of all Shirley loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and wanted her family, friends and loved ones to know and love Him as well. Her faith in the Lord allowed her to minister to people through prayer, fellowship, and a good cup of coffee or tea. She loved inviting friends over for a small tea party.
Shirley is survived by her son, Kirk Spell of Rapid City; Grandson, Levi of Rapid City; Daughter in law, Karrie Olhsen-Richards of Mitchell, SD; and grandchildren Alexander & Elizabeth Spell of Mitchell, SD. Shirley was proceeded in death by her parents Jim and Betty Jenkins of Cheyenne WY, Sister Susanne Peters of Las Vegas NV; and her son, Eric Spell of Rapid City SD.
To recognize Shirley's love of hosting and always making sure the "new person or family" feel welcome and loved:
Matthew 25:40
"The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’"
